Millenium Craze

Khutbat al-Jumu`ah

Everyone is crazy with celebrating the New Year, as if it would change everything. They must know that nothing will change what is written by Allah. "Laa yaabis wa la ratbin ill fee kitabin mubeen, “there is nothing wet nor dry except it is in a clear book.” [6: 59]  Everyone is going to see his own `amal - his deeds.

Everything has been written in the Day of Promises, when our souls were addressed in Allah’s Divine Presence and He said, “who is your lord and we said, “You are our Lord.” Whatever Allah has planned and designed for His servants is going to happen.

Instead of celebrating the advent of the year 2000 let them celebrate the coming of Judgment Day.

You see how they are showing you something from all across the world - in seconds. It is broadcast from all around the world. That is their technology. That is the technology that Allah gave them. "Wa maa uteetum min al ilmi illa qaleela."Whatever you have been given from knowledge it is very little.” [17: 85] – which means your knowledge is in limits. Besides Allah’s knowledge you have been given next to nothing.

With all this technology with which people today are so fascinated--taking us from New Zealand, to Australia, and from there to Egypt--we are happy. This itself is a sign to you that you cannot hide anything. Everything is being taped and videotaped by satellite cameras. Wherever they are directed, they are able to pick up and show what is happening.

What do you think about those whom Allah assigned on you, 24 hours a day, upon your shoulders?  What you are doing is transmitted and you are exposed everywhere in Heavenly sources and levels. All our `amal is being exposed, good or bad. That is why the Prophet (s) said, “turadu `alaya `amal ummati” – “the works of my nation are displayed to me.” For this reason he (s) said, O Allah give me shafa`a (intercession) to save humanity. He said, “I see your `amal, and if I see good I praise Allah and if I see bad, I ask forgiveness," - the Prophet (s) seeks forgiveness for that `abd, that servant of Allah. That means everything that we are doing, in our home, in our work, in the mosque, every thought, every khatir, is picked up.

Look when they make an EKG, they pick up everything. They monitor every pulse in your system. They can scan every cell in your system and know everything about it. What about the One who created you? He created angels and He assigned them to register whatever you do and think.

We are not saved. “Laa nuqeemu lahum yawmal qiyama wazna.” - "Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works?" [18: 104]  Don’t think just because they are famous with their celebrating the year 2000 millenium they are going to have any weight with Allah. This technology has no weight for us. Whatever they are using for something that is in dunya, it stays in dunya and it does not go to akhira. What goes to akhira? That is your good `amal, your saving account. Do you want a saving account?  That is good `amal. When Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala wants something to take place, He is not waiting for Y2K or the failure of a satellite, as if He is waiting for something to happen. If He wants something to happen it happens. As long as you are expecting it, it will not happen. It will happen suddenly. Don’t prepare yourself for an expected event, that is the ego’s protection - a selfish act.

Don’t say “because of what is going to happen during Y2K I have to prepare myself for something big.” No! In every moment you have to prepare yourself, preparing for akhira as if Judgment Day were coming tomorrow. It means you always have to be prepared, not just for certain events.

You must prepare every day that your might die at that moment or Mahdi might appear at that moment or `Isa will show up at that moment of that Israfil might be preparing to blow in the trumpet.

That is why one great scholar Khalid al-Baghdadi, was advising scholars and his followers, preparing his followers, saying "Mahdi is coming, prepare yourself." That means that preparation for akhira must be continuous. Not, “I’m preparing myself for something that is expected. And then I forget what is happening." Do you know what is happening in your heart at every moment? He is `Allaam al ghuyub, Knower of the Unseen, He knows your heart, He knows everything.
That is why He gave us something to save us. He gave us Ramadan, the month of mercy. Now the 2nd ten days of the month has finished.

Last week we spoke of the first ten days, dressing the believer with mercy, dressing him or her completely with mercy. The 2nd ten days Allah will forgive, when He dresses them with his mercy, nothing (of sin) will be left on them, and they will be purified. When He bestows His mercy on His servants what will happen? He will dress them with the knowledge and the power to oppose Shaytan, with adornment of beauty and all kinds of protection against `amal ash-shaytan – the doings of Shaytan. When a person is dressed with that mercy the Prophet (s) said the 2nd ten days consist of maghfira - forgiveness. When that mercy descends on human beings, Allah will waive the affect of Iblis on them. Though Iblis may still be playing with them, Allah will waive that and forgive them. When He forgives them, then He frees them from hellfire, itqan min an-nar.

If He forgives us, what is there to be punished for? Nothing. “Alladheena aamanu wa `amilu salihaat” “Those who believe and do good works.” When you believe you do good: you pray, you fast, you give zakat, you make hajj, you help people. At that time the verse “kanaat lahum janaat al-firdawsi nuzula” [18: 107] will apply to you. “Gardens of Paradise will be their homes, they will be hosted therein.” Not any garden, but Jannat al-Firdaws. Firdaws is the heart of Jannat. Firdaws is the essence and reality of paradises.  Allah will give that to believers whom he forgives in Ramadan. That is why in the last ten days of Ramadan the Prophet (s) used to make itikaf, disconnecting himself, staying in the masjid. That is the place to be turned into a paradise. That is where Allah will be praising him, sending him as a mercy to his nation, seeking forgiveness for his Nation.

O believers around the world - don’t think that celebrating the year 2000 is a Muslim event. It is an innovation. That is not accepted in Islam. In Islam there is no observance of the year 2000. If you want to observe something, observe the Muslim holidays, observe what the Muslims have been given to observe. The Prophet (s) never observed that night, and he never said there is a night for celebrating the new year.

Unfortunately we see millions and millions of Muslims around the world are celebrating this night, not conscious that what they are doing is wrong. They object to commemoration of the Prophet’s (s) birthday, but they don’t object to celebrating New Year’s Eve. They are happy with it, as if a miracle was appearing. And this is becoming a ritual for Muslims. Muslims cannot deny this fact. We know this and no one can deny it: in the Middle East, in the Far East, in the Subcontinent, in the Gulf, in Africa, in N. Africa, in Europe, in Australia, in America they are celebrating that night.

When you tell them to celebrate the Prophet’s (s) Birth, they say “bid`a!” Don’t they know that New Year’s is not just bid`a, it is haram!? They are doing something that is in imitation of unbelievers. They are imitating those whom they think are their leaders, holding a big celebration.

As to Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala, anything that comes from Him will appear to us suddenly. For Him however, everything is planned. “Wa Kulla shayin fee miqdar”, everything is monitored, even to the minutest smallest measure for which the scale can account– it means to an atom of precision, “wa kulla shayin fee miqdar.”

There is no way you can say, I don’t know. That is not an excuse. It is going to happen. Allah promised His believers, to Muslims, that Judgment Day is coming, and before that Mahdi is coming, `Isa is coming, Yajuj and Majuj (Gog and Magog) are coming, Antichrist is coming, daabbat al-ard (the Beast of the earth) is coming. Yet Muslims are forgetting and planning for their future, hundreds of years of plans. Yet no one is planning for their akhira, even for one hour.

That is why when that day comes, we will be facing something tremendous. Everyone will be shaking, Allah says, “Yawma tatee as-sama’u bi-dukhaanin mubeen..” “When the sky brings a vast smoke, people will say this is the greatest punishment coming on earth.” [44:10] If you are a Muslim and you say you believe, why don’t you believe that this smoke is coming, why don’t you prepare yourself for that day? Why do you run to prepare for Y2K and you don’t prepare for that smoke? Is that not correct?

Allah said, “Aqtarabati-s`sa`at wa anshaq al-qamar” “Judgment Day approached and the moon split”, [54: 1]. Why are you not preparing for that day? As Allah is saying, it might be tomorrow. O Muslims, that is a rehearsal. What happened just now is a rehearsal. People were expecting something awful to happen, everyone was on his nerves not knowing what to do. Allah is giving this as a sign - that all your life has to be like that. Your death is a big event in itself. Even if you did not see the great events that happen in the Last Days, your death is enough of a sign for that day.

Are we preparing for death. What are we doing, when Allah calls our souls? Can we say “please postpone it for one more day?” You cannot. Can you say give me one hour more, I will make wudu` (a state of ritual purity) and pray two rakats. That means you must be in wudu`, praying, 24 hours a day.

If someone knows he is going to die in one hour, what will he do: go and sleep with his wife or make sajda (prostration)? What is the correct answer? Is it not to go into sajda – is it not feeling afraid? Since death can happen at anytime, that means you must be prepared for it to happen at any time. It means you must be in sajda at every moment. If you know that you are going to die, you will sit and focus and concentrate so that shaytan does not enter your heart for that hour. That is how we must be all our life.

But we are helpless and hopeless, we have nothing in our hands. Therefore Allah is indicating, “O my servant you cannot be in prostration at every moment, so I made it easy for you.” That is why we must be in istighfaar, seeking forgiveness all our life, every moment keeping our tongue in dhikrullah – remembrance of Allah.

This day is preparation and a rehearsal to prepare for an event that might come at any moment. That event may happen at any time. When Allah wants Mahdi to appear, that is not going to be a dunya (worldly) event. When `Isa appears that will not be an ordinary event. Expect something great. Don’t say “there remain millions of years.” Sayiddina Muhammad (s) did not say “there are millions of years.”[1]  The Prophet (s) used to tell the Sahaba about Mahdi and `Isa and the Dajjal, and the Sahaba thought that the Dajjal was behind the date tree.[2]  That is how the Prophet (s) used to tell the Sahaba. Don’t be like those ignorant ones – in the end they will be biting their fingertips. They will be biting their fingertips at the time of death (in regret). They refused what Allah sent to them and refused what The Prophet (s) said to them.

Don’t let that advice come in one ear and out the other, let it have effect. Keep yourself busy with dhikrullah. Don’t be busy with dunya. Do your dunya work, but keep what Sayiddina Ali (r) said, “work for dunya as if you are living forever but live for akhira as if you will die tomorrow.” And he added to that, “biqadir ma ta`aysh feeha.” That means “in the proportion with how much you will live in each.”

Don’t forget what Sayiddina Ali (r) said. The companions never left one single moment that they were not in jihad against the ego or jihad in education of people about Islam. This is our task, this is our work. Try to be diplomats for Islam, to teach the peace of Islam, the tolerance of Islam, the respect of Islam. Islam is the true way of life, there is no way other than Islam. “Al-yawma akmaltu lakum deenukum...”This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” [5: 3]. Islam is the religion of humanity. Keep in the way of Allah and He will keep you safe.

Second Khutba

Before continuing, I would like to say, consider how much you worried, while on radio and on TV they were saying “Prepare for Y2K, have water, have cash money, and so on on hand.” That was the publicity of every government, every township, every bank. And what was everyone doing? Preparing! When Allah tells us about akhira, why then are we not preparing? When He is telling us why are we not believing? We believe these people telling us to prepare by storing water, and so on, and we are forgetting what Allah is saying: “I do not desire from them any sustenance and I do not desire that they should feed Me. Surely Allah is the Bestower of sustenance...” [51: 58] This means people cannot provide themselves. If you are on the way of Allah He will not leave you to feel hungry. He will send food to your door. Why do we have to believe these people but Allah we don’t believe? Why when the Prophet (s) is warning us about the Judgment Day and the Last Days, are we not preparing for them?

That is a lesson for us. We are seeing people running and preparing--that is a lesson, for us to know that we need that for akhira. If Sayiddina Azra’il comes to take our soul… O Allah we are weak. We have no power,  O Allah send guidance to our hearts.

[1]An example of what is related from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: The Prophet (s) said: The mill of Islam will go round till the year thirty-five, or thirty-six, or thirty-seven; then if they perish, they will have followed the path of those who perished before them, but if their religion is maintained, it will be maintained for seventy years. I asked: Does it mean seventy years which remain or seventy years which are gone by? He replied: It means (seventy years) that are gone by.
Sahih Abi Dawud, Book 35, 4241.

[2]An-Nawwas b. Sam'an reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) made a mention of the Dajjal one day in the morning. He sometimes described him to be insignificant and sometimes described (his turmoil) as very significant and we felt) as if he were in the cluster of the date-palm trees. When we went to him (to the Holy Prophet) in the evening and he read (the signs of fear) in our faces, he said: What is the matter with you? We said: Allah's Messenger, you made a mention of the Dajjal in the morning (sometimes describing him) to be insignificant and sometimes very important, until we began to think as if he were present in some (near) part of the cluster of the date-palm trees. Thereupon he said: I harbour fear in regard to you in so many other things besides the Dajjal. If he comes forth while I am among on, I shall contend with him on your behalf, but if he comes forth while I am not amongst you, a man must contend on his own behalf and Allah would take care of every Muslim on my behalf (and safeguard him against his evil). He (Dajjal) would be a young man with twisted, contracted hair, and a blind eye. I compare him to 'Abd-ul-'Uzza b. Qatan. He who amongst you would survive to see him should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf (18). He would appear on the way between Syria and Iraq and would spread mischief right and left. O servant of Allah! adhere (to the path of Truth)….
