salam alaykum wa rahmatullah wa barakutuhOfficial invitation to attend the Islamic Conference of Ahl as-Sunna wal-Jama`at. It is a pleasure of the Sri Lankan Shariah Council to offer its best regards and best wishes to Your Eminence. And it is a pleasure to bring forth this request to Your Eminence to attend an Islamic conference to explain the rules and the aqidas of Ahl as-Sunna wal-Jama`at: conference to be held on the 13th and 14th of June, 1998.
Insha-allah with the coordination of both the ministers, Sayyid Alawi, Mawlana, Minister of the local and provincial sharia councils and Mr. MHM Ashraf, Minister of the Mawali and Renovation and Reconstruction and the President of the Islamic Conference Party.
Noteworthy to mention that the Jama`at of Ahl as-Sunna in Sri Lanka as is the case in the whole world, faces great challenges from within our own Muslim Ummah. Challenges include unsafe and untrustworthy
doctrine propagated by various groups. Though the actions of these groups may vary and their style may differ, they all unify in their efforts to demolish the strong bases on which the Jama`at of Ahl as-Sunna was built: `aqida, sharia`ah and haqiqa.
And these groups have instigated intellectual chaos and misguidance in 'Aqida and have occupied themselves in marginal matters that are far away from the reality and concerns of Muslims. In addition, these groups were the cause of separation, division and hatred and bloody conflicts inside and outside the Houses of Allah, knowing that from the common knowledge of Islam we all should invite to unify our rows and our words.
As a result of these empty attempts financially supported and motivated by powerful hands, to march forward in order to achieve its political goals, the ideas of tajseem (anthropomorphism) are beginning to appear among people, in addition to spreading corrupt `aqida brought forth by their ulama. They also consider the madhahib of fiqh and their scholars as instigators/intruders in Islam and they added to their din new innovations that Allah has never declared authority for. These corrupt scholars were bewildered when they were exposed to the spiritual life in Islam, embodied by the dignified tariqas of tasawwuf. Therefore they regarded them as mere imaginings and chaotic exercises with no connection to Islam.
In order to clarify and correct these understandings, the Shariah Council was established in 1996 after the Jama`at and the institutions have gathered around the supporting sources and as loyalty to our beloved Prophet (s) whose greatness cannot be emcompassed by the furthest limits of praise; and as a realization of our larger hopes on which the Council is based. The Council has decided to hold an Islamic conference on a national level, for the ulama, khatibs, teachers and lecturers in the religious schools and Arabic madrasas and the trustees and heads of masajid. Also the decision has been made to invite the leading ulama of the Arab world to participate in this conference in order to lecture on the topics of concern and interest to the Islamic Ummah.
We have the pleasure to forward you an invitation to participate in this conference to be held on the 13th and 14th of June, 1998, insha-Allah and to be our guest for a minimum of 10 days in order to participate in a cultural meetings on a national level. We also have the pleasure to assure you that the council will be responsible for all expenses of your visit to our country and the government of Sri Lanka will grant the title "honorary guest" to Your Eminence and will take responsibility to provide "honorary" protection throughout your stay. Could you graciously respond at your earliest convenience to this request so that we can take the necessary steps regarding your visit.
Also to prepare the topics of the conference and in order to forward the invitation to others in case you are unable to attend, may Allah prevent that.
Please accept our great thanks and respect.
Salaam alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakutuh,
