Addiction & Islamic work
Is
it permissible for a believer who is addicted to smoking marijuana
or tobacco to participate in making dawah or jihad?
A. A believer must
do dawah but at same time must ask Allah's repentance and must
purify himself or herself from forbidden actions. That is, if someone
knows he is doing something wrong, how can he continue? Smoking marijuana
affects the mind and thus is no different than khamr, liquor,
which is prohibited in Islam. It is classified as an intoxicant. Therefore
he or she must repent and try to reform this behavior in himself or
herself. Once this is accomplished his or her dawah will be
much more effective, as at that time he will be a true example to
others. Otherwise whom he addresses with dawah will look at
him and ask, “how can we follow such a person’s religion – it allows
him to be “stoned” under the influence of that drug? |
