Q. I know it is allowed in Islam for men to have upto four wives. I was wondering if this is something which is recommended or unrecommended and why?

A. It is not recommended. Allah said one must be just and fair and this is very difficult. It is a heavy responsibility to carry. Our Shaykhs usually recommended against it for as much as I can remember, although they have allowed it. Allah knows best.
