  • Ahl al-Bayt’s Status Before Allah (ﷻ)

Ahl al-Bayt’s Status Before Allah (ﷻ)

Allāh said in regard to the family of the Prophet ﷺ:

    قُل لا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْراً إِلا الْمَوَدَّةَ فِي الْقُرْبَى

    Say: I do not ask of you any reward for it but love for my near relatives;
    (ash-Shūrā 42:23)

This shows the two sides of love of the Prophet ﷺ―on the one hand love for his family, and on the other hand love for the Ummah, in particular the sincere, guided and perfected ones who hold fast to the Sunnah.
In respect of the first love, the the Prophet ﷺ said, “I have left among you two matters by holding fast to which, you shall never be misguided: Allāh’s Book and the Sunnah of His Prophet.” Another version adds: “And these two shall never part ways until they show up at the Pond.”

    Other versions state:
I am leaving among you that which if you hold to it, you shall never go astray, one of them greater than the other: Allāh’s Book―a rope extended down from the heaven to the earth―and my mantle (‘itra), the People of my House. These two shall never part ways until they come to me at the Pond. Look well to how you act with them after me.
The five mentioned here are known as Ahl al-‘abā’a, for Jibrīl covered them with the cloak (‘abā’a) of the Prophet ﷺ, and they were given importance as Ahl al-Bayt in two incidents mentioned in the Qur’ān:
It is established that when the verse of mutual invocation of curses (mubāhala) was revealed:

And whoso disputeth with thee concerning him, after the knowledge which hath come unto thee, say (unto him): Come! We will summon our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves, then we will pray humbly (to our Lord) and (solemnly) invoke the curse of Allah upon those who lie. (Āl-‘Imrān 3:61),
the Prophet ﷺ summoned ‘Alī, Fātima, al-Hasan, and al-Husayn, and said: “O Allāh! These are my Family” (Allāhumā hā’ūlā’i Ahlī).

‘Amir bin Sa‘d bin Abī Waqqās reported on the authority of his father that Mu‘awīya bin Abī Sufyān appointed Sa‘d as the governor and said: “What prevents you from abusing Abū Turāb ( ‘Alī)?” At this he said: “It is because of three things which I remember Allah’s Messenger ﷺ having said about him that I would not abuse him and even if I find one of those three things for me, it would be more dear to me than the red camels. …(The third occasion is) when the (following) verse was revealed: Let us summon our children and your children. Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ called ‘Alī, Fātima, Hasan and Husain and said: ‘O Allāh, they are my family.’”

He repeated this act when the verse of the cleansing of the People of the House was revealed:

Allah only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying, (al-Ahzāb 33:33)
as mentioned in the following hadith:

Abī Sa‘īd (ر) related that the Prophet ﷺ said:
This verse was revealed regarding five: regarding myself; regarding ‘Alī and Hassan and Husayn and Fātima, “Allāh only desires to keep away the uncleanness from you, O people of the House! and to purify you a (thorough) purifying.”
Lexically, the term ‘itra was defined as “A man’s relatives such as his children, grandchildren, and paternal cousins” while in the context of the present hadiths it was explained to mean “Those of the Prophet’s Family who follow his Religion and cling to his commands.” What emerges from these meanings together with the two wordings of the hadith “I have left among you two matters” is firm evidence that there is an inseparable connection, until the Last Day, between the Qur’ān, the Sunnah, and the Family of the Prophet ﷺ.
Know that the light of the Prophet ﷺ is in you, for Allāh said:

…And know that Allah’s Messenger is within you; (al-Hujurāt, 49:7)

Through this verse, and the preceding narrations, we must know that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was informing us that his light is within every believer; with a particular emphasis on the qualities of perfect character exemplified by Sayyidinā Abū Bakr ر and Sayyidinā ‘Umar ر, while those related to the Prophet ﷺ through blood, have the specialty of being from his family, whom Allāh favored in a tremendous way―particularly the descendants of Ahl al-abā’a, the children of Sayyidinā ‘Alī ر and Sayyida Fātima ر. And all will come together with the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgment, meeting at his Pond.

    Abu Hurairah (r) narrated:
“Al-Aqra’ bin Habis saw the prophet kissing Al-Hasan”- Ibn Abi `Umar (one of the narrators) said:”Al-Hasan and Al-Husain.” So he said: ‘I have ten children and I do not kiss any one of them.’ So the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever shows no mercy, he will be shown no mercy.”

    Narrated Salma (r):

“I entered upon Umm Salamah while she was crying, so I said: ‘What causes you to cry?’ She said: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah – that is, in a dream – and there was dirt on his head and his beard. so I said: “What is wrong with you, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: ‘I just witnessed the killing of Al-Husain.’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, gharib)

    Narrated Abu Sa`eed (r):

    Narrated Abu Bakrah (r):

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ascended the Minbar and said: “Indeed, this son [Hasan bin `Ali (r)] of mine is a chief, Allah shall bring peace between two [tremendous] parties through his hands.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, sahih)

    Narrated Ya`la bin Murrah (r):

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Husain is from me, and I am from Husain. Allah loves whoever loves Husain. Husain is a Sibt among the Asbat.”  (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, hasan)
[Asbat, plural of Sibt: A great tribe. Meaning, Al-Husain would have many offspring, such that they would become a great tribe. And this has indeed occurred. See Tuhfat Al-Ahwadhi (4/341).]

Narrated `Amir bin Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas:

from his father who said: “When this Ayah was revealed: ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women… [fa-qul ta`alaw nad`u abna’a-na wa abna’a-kum],’ (3:61)’ the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) called `Ali, Fatimah, Hasan and Husain and said: ‘O Allah! This is my family.’”  (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, hasan gharib sahih)

It is related that there was once a group of Christians who arrived from Najran and when they were called to al-Mubahala. They responded: “Let us discuss it between us and we’ll get back to you.” They said to al-`Aqib, whose opinion they trusted, “what do you think?” He said, “You have known his prophethood is true. You also know that there is not one prophet that performed mubahala against a people but they perished as a result of it.” The Prophet came out for Mubahala. He held al-Hussain (r) in his arms and he held al-Hasan’s (r) finger. Lady Fatima (r) came behind him, while behind her came Imam Ali (r). The Prophet said to them: “When I pray you should say Ameen.” However, when the head priest saw them, he quietly murmured to his followers: “O you group of Christians! Without doubt I can see such faces (in front of me) that if these people plead to Allah Almighty to move the mountain from its place, then through their invocation Allah Almighty would move the mountain. For the sake of God! do not have a Mubaahalah against them or else we will be destroyed.” So they obeyed the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and gave him the tribute of two thousand red robes and thirty shields of iron.
And he (s) said, “By Him in Whose hand is my soul! If they had entered into imprecation they would have been transformed into monkeys and pigs, and there would have erupted in the valley a conflagration of fire engulfing them all: and surely Allah would have annihilated Najran and its inhabitants even the birds on treetops.” There is in this an evidence of his Prophethood and in the virtue of those who came with him from His Family. (Tafsir al-Baydawi)

It was narrated from Sa`eed bin Abu Rashid that Ya`la bin Murrah (r) told them that:

They had gone out with the Prophet to a meal to which they had been invited, and Husain was there playing in the street. The Prophet came in front of the people and stretched out his hands, and the child started to run here and there. The Prophet made him laugh until he caught him, then he put one hand under his chin and the other on his head and kissed him, and said, “Husain is part of me and I am part of him. May Allah love those who love Husain. Husain is a tribe among tribes.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, hasan)

I was related by `Uqba ibn `Aamir that he said: the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

When the People of Paradise settle in Paradise, Paradise says, O my Lord! Did You not promise me to decorate me with two pillars from Your Pillars?” Allah replies, “Did I not decorate you with al-Hasan and al-Husayn?” The Prophet (s) said, “then Paradise began to huff and puff like the huffing of a groom.” (Tarikh Baghdad)
