This Orientalist fiction of Islam, sufism, the Qur’an, the Prophet etc. as Christian outgrowths is the swan song of missionaries. It reads like a dismissal, but is actually a petition for acceptance: You are so much like us! Can’t we be a bit like you? It seems to stem from a psychological need to (a) remain on familiar ground, (b) reassure oneself with delusions of spiritual paternity and (c) stifle a hidden thirst to accept Islam as the one true Religion.
