Abī Talhah al-Ansārī said:
The Messenger of Allāh arose one morning in a very pleasant mood with signs of good tidings apparent on his face. They said, “O Prophet of Allāh , you are in a very pleasant mood with signs of good tidings showing on your face.” He said, “Lo, the angel (Jibrīl) came to me, and said, ‘Are you not pleased, O Muhammad, that your Lord says:
No one of your nation invokes blessings on you except that I will bless him tenfold and no one from your nation asks Allāh to grant you peace except that I will grant him peace tenfold.
The Prophet responded, ‘Yes, indeed.'”

‘Abd ar-Rahman b. ‘Auf said: Allāh’s Messenger went out and entering among some palm trees prostrated himself so long that I was afraid Allāh had taken his soul. I went and looked, and he raised his head and said, “What is the matter with you?” I mentioned that to him, and he told me that Jibril had come and given him the good news that Allāh said, “If anyone invokes one blessing on you I will bless him, and if anyone greets you I will greet him.”
[Ahmad transmitted it from ‘Abd-Rahmān bin ‘Auf, al-Hākim in his Mustadrak with an authentic isnad, Ibn Najār. Again Aħmad and al-Haythamī in his Zawa’id recorded it with a different wording. Hadith 28
Abū Hurayrah also reported that the Prophet said:
Prayers upon me is a light on the Sirāt (Bridge) and the one who sends prayers upon me on Friday eighty times will be forgiven eighty years of sin.
[ Abū Nu‘aym reported it while Ibn Hajr graded it weak. Imām al-Ghazālī related it in his Ihya and al-Dāruqtnī graded it gharīb (rare).]
Note: While the classification of this hadīth is weak, it doesn’t reduce the significance of its meaning; nor does it mean that the hadīth is false, a different status altogether. However it is agreed upon that if a hadīth acted upon is graded as weak but it encourages virtuous actions, then it is commendable to act upon it in one’s life. [see: Ibn Taymiyya on using lesser grades of hadith for encouraging good virtues.]
Hadith 29

Anas bin Malik reported:
Allah’s Messenger and I were coming out of the mosque that we met a person on the threshold of the mosque and he said to Allah’s Messenger , “When would be the Last Hour?” Allah’s Messenger said: “What preparation have you prepared for that?” The man became silent and then said, “Allah’s Messenger, I have made no significant preparation with prayer and fasting and charity but I, however, love Allah and His Messenger.” Thereupon he said, “You would be along with one whom you love.”
[reported in al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Abū ad-Dardā related that the Prophet said:
Increase invoking blessings upon me on Friday, it is witnessed by the Angels
[Recorded in the Sunan of Ibn Mājah in which al-Haythamī in his Zawā’id said it is authentic.]
Hadith 33
The Prophet is reported to have said:
Whoever among my nation invokes blessings upon me, ten good deeds are written for him and ten sins are erased from him.
[Imām al-Ghazālī reported it in his Ihyā. Al-Haythamī reported it in his al-Zawā’id as did al-Bazzār and al-Hindī in his Kanz al-‘Ummāl with a slightly different wording.]
Hadith 34
On the authority of Anas that the Messenger of Allāh said:
There are three under the shade of Allāh on a day when there is no shade except His; the one who relieved a distress from someone from my nation; the one who gave life to my Sunnah and the one who invoked blessings on me the most .
[It is recorded in the Mustadrak and the Musnad of al-Firdaus. Al-Hāfiz as-Suyūtī also recorded it in his Burūj al-Hilāl.]
Hadith 35
Ubayy ibn Ka‘b said: “After one third of the night the Prophet used to get up. One such time he said: O People! Remember Allah! The rājifa [first blow of the Trumpet] is upon us! The rādifa [second blow of the Trumpet] follows it. Death has come.” Ubayy said: ya rasūlallāh innī ukthiru al-salāta `alayka fa kam aj`al laka min salātī “O Messenger of Allah, I make much salawāt upon you as a habit. How much of my prayer should I devote to you?” The Prophet said: “As much as you like.” Ubayy said: “A quarter?” The Prophet said: “As you like, but if you add to that it will be better for you.” Ubayy then mentioned a third, then a half, then two thirds, and always the Prophet answered: “As you like, but if you add to that it will be better for you.” Finally Ubayy said: yā rasūlallāh innī urīdu an aj`ala salātī kullahā lak –
“O Messenger of Allah, I want to devote my entire prayer (i.e. du`a) to you.” Whereupon the Prophet said: “Then you will be freed from care and your sins will be forgiven.”
(Another version has: “Then Allah will suffice you in the matter of your worldly life and your hereafter.”)
[at-Tirmidhī and al-Hākim narrated it and graded it sound. ]
The meaning given in Al-Mubarakfuri’s commentary on at-Tirmidhī, Tuhfa al-Ahwadhī said:
What is meant by, “I make all of my prayers for you,” is “I turn over my prayers to you at every time which I supplicate therein for my self.”
As-Sābūnī wrote in his abridgment of Ibn Kathīr’s commentary the opinion of al-Imām an-Nawawī:
If one invokes blessings on the Prophet , let him combine it with prayers and peace and not fall short on either of them. So do not say, salla-llahu `alayhi and not `alayhis-salām, only.
As-Sābūnī commented:
This is what he said taken from the verse, “O ye who believe, invoke blessings on him and peace unceasingly.” For it is more proper to be said, salla-llahu `alayhi wa sallam, unceasingly.
Commenting on this hadith, Al-Haytami said:
It is understood from the wording of these narrations that the meaning of the word salāt in the expression: “I shall devote my salāt to you” is du`a’ — invocation… Then the meaning is: “There is a time in which I make du‘a on behalf of myself: how much of that should I devote to you?” If this is established firmly, then consider what the Shaykh al-Islam al-hāfiz Ibn Hajar said as reported from him by his student al-hāfiz al-Sakhawi who particularly commended this saying of his: “This hadith constitutes a tremendous principle of the Religion for whoever makes du‘a after his recitation and says: O Allah, grant our Master Allah’s Messenger the reward of this worship.”
Commenting on this hadith, Imam Sakhawi said:
Salāt in this hadith means invocation (du‘a) and habitual devotion(wird) in the following sense: “There is a time in which I make du‘a on behalf of myself: how much of that should I devote to you?” The Prophet did not consider that he should place a limit for him in this respect in order not to close the gate of superabundance for him. Accordingly he persisted in giving Ubayy the choice at the same time as he stressed for him surplus in invocation until Ubayy said: “I shall devote my entire prayer to you.” That is: I shall invoke blessings upon you instead of asking anything for myself. Whereupon the Prophet said: “Then you will be freed from care,” that is: do not worry either for your Religion or for your worldly need, because invoking blessings on me includes both remembrance of Allah and rendering honor to the Prophet; and the sense of this is an indication to Ubayy that he is actually invoking for himself, as confirmed by the Prophet’s report on behalf of his Lord: “Whoever is occupied from beseeching Me because of remembering Me, I shall grant him the best of what I grant those who beseech.” Know then that if you make most of your worship consist in invoking blessings upon your Prophet, Allah will suffice you in the matter of your worldly life and your hereafter.
However we say that , according to the party of the bukhala — the mean and miserly — to follow the Prophet’s advice in this matter “would foster his worship”! How far is this “Salafi” opinion from the Qur’an and the Sunnah! In 1,400 years of sending salawāt on the Prophet far more abundantly than in our age, we have never witnessed what they claim; how then do they want us to fear its occurrence now? And have they forgotten that the Prophet specifically said: “Those closest to me in the hereafter are those who invoked blessings upon me the most (in dunyā)” and “No people sit at length without mentioning Allah and invoking blessings on His Prophet except they will incur dissatisfaction from Allah (or: dissatisfaction on the Day of resurrection): if He likes He will punish them and if He likes He will forgive them”? Rather, they are intent on hindering Muslims from expressing love for their Prophet through invoking blessings upon him, celebrating his birth, reading his life, and encouraging each other towards knowing him and loving him more than their own parents and children. For this is the great characteristic of this Community which its enemies wish to eradicate: we know our Prophet; we keep his status high; we prefer his Sunnah to all other lifestyles; and we cherish his love among us more dearly than our own lives and properties. [Shaykh Hisham Kabbani]
Hadith 36
Abu Hurayrah related that the Prophet of Allah (s) said: not one person greets me except that Allah returns my soul to me in order that I will return his greetings. [Abu Dawud in his Sunan]
Imam Suyuti (r) said, “The Prophet’s (s) soul is always there and alive, because in every moment thousands of people are sending salawaat on him, which means his soul never leaves his body and is always present.” [Shaykh Hisham Kabbani]
Hadith 37
Hayaatee khayrun lakum tuhadithoona wa yuhdatha lakum fa idhaa anaa mitta kaanat wafaatee khayran lakum. Tu`radu `alayya `amalakum fa in raa’itu khayran hamadta ’Llah wa in raa’itu sharran astaghfarta lahum.
The Prophet (s) said: My life is good for you as you will relate from me and it will be related to you, and when I die my passing will be better for you. I observe the deeds of my ummah. If I find good I thank Allah, and if I see bad, I ask forgiveness for them.
Shaykh Hisham Kabbani explains “and when I die my passing will be better for you” as meaning, “My death is better for you than my life, because then I can pray for you.”)
Hadith 38
Man salla `alayya fee yawm alf marratin lam yamut hattā yara maq`adahu min al-jannat.
Whoever blesses me in a day one thousand times would not die before being shown his place in Paradise.
Hadith 39
Man salla ‘alayya fee yawm alf marratin lam yamut hattā yubashshir bil-jannat.
Whoever blesses me in a day one thousand times would not die before being given the glad tidings of Paradise.
Hadith 40
Maa min rajulin yusalli ‘alayya mi’ata illa ghafar lahu ‘Llah.
There in no man who invokes blessings on me 100 times except that Allah forgives him.
[at-Tabarani in his Kabir, Abu Na`eem in his Hilya, sahih]
