Kharijites & Their Successors
The Khawarij (Kharijites) were known as ‘the Seceders’ and sprung up in the time of the Prophet (s) and developed into a full-fledged movement opposing the last rightly-guided caliph under a simplistic doctrine which allowed them to make takfir (accuse of disbelief) large numbers of Muslims. This movement continues up to the present day as a variety of sects, the last of which, it is said, are the Wahabis.
