Hadith on the Merits of Rajab – احاديث فضائل رجب

Rajab al-Murajjab

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا دَخَلَ رَجَبٌ قَالَ:  اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِي رَجَبٍ، وَشَعْبَانَ، وَبَلِّغْنَا رَمَضَانَ 

When the month of Rajab was entered the Prophet (s) used to say: “O Allah, bless us in Rajab and Sha`ban, and let us reach Ramadan”.
(Zawaa’id al-Musnad, at-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, al-Bayhaqi in ash-Shu`ab, Abu Nu‘aym in al-Hilyah)

Hadith 1

رجب شهر الله ، وشعبان شهري، ورمضان شهر أمتي‏.‏

‏أبو الفتح ابن أبي الفوارس في أماليه – عن الحسن مرسلا

Rajab is the month of Allah, Sha`bān is my month and Ramadān is the month of my Nation.[1]

Commentary

قال الزمخشري‎:‎ خصه من بين الأشهر الحرم لمكان عاشوراء فأفضل الأشهر لصوم التطوع المحرم ثم رجب ثم بقية الأشهر الحرم ثم شعبان

Az-Zamakhshari said: [Muharram’s] distinction among the sacred months is due to `Āshūra. The best of the months for the voluntary fast is Muharram, then Rajab then the rest of the sacred months and then Sha`bān.

Hadith 2

كان إذا دخل رجب قال: اللهم بارك لنا في رجب وشعبان، وبلغنا رمضان. وكان إذا كانت ليلة الجمعة قال: هذه ليلة غراء، ويوم أزهر التخريج (برموز السيوطي): (هب) وابن عساكر عن أنس التخريج (مفصلا): البيهقي في شعب الإيمان وابن عساكر عن أنس

‏The Prophet , when he entered the month of Rajab would say, “O Allah bless us in our Rajab and Sha`ban and cause us to reach Ramadan!” And on the night of Jum`ah he used to say, “This is the night of beauty and day of brightness.”[2]

Hadith 3

حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏عُثْمَانُ بْنُ حَكِيمٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏سَأَلْتُ ‏ ‏سَعِيدَ بْنَ جُبَيْرٍ ‏ ‏عَنْ صَوْمِ رَجَبٍ كَيْفَ ‏ ‏تَرَى ‏ ‏فِيهِ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنِي ‏ ‏ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ ‏ ‏أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏كَانَ ‏‏ يَصُومُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يُفْطِرُ وَيُفْطِرُ حَتَّى نَقُولَ لَا يَصُومُ ‏

Muhammad bin `Ubayd related that `Uthmān ibn Hakeem al-Ansaari said,  “I asked Sa`eed ibn Jubayr about the fast of Rajab, what was his opinion on it. He said, ‘Ibn `Abbās narrated that the Prophet used to fast until we said he would never break fast, and he used to break fast until we said he will never fast [again.]'”[3]

Hadith 4

صوم أول يوم من رجب كفارة ثلاث سنين، والثاني كفارة سنتين، والثالث كفارة سنة، ثم كل يوم شهرا التخريج (برموز السيوطي): أبو محمد الخلال في فضائل رجب عن ابن عباس التخريج (مفصلا): أبو محمد الخلال في فضائل رجب عن ابن عباس

‏The fast of the first day of Rajab is repentance for three years and the [fasting] second day is repentance for two years and the [fast of] third day is repentance for a year and then each [remaining] day is [repentance for] a month.[4]

Hadith 5

رجب من شهور الحرم وأيامه مكتوبة على أبواب السماء السادسة، فإذا صام الرجل منه يوماً وجدد صومه بتقوى الله نطق الباب ونطق اليوم قالا: يا رب اغفر له! وإذا لم يتم صومه بتقوى الله لم يستغفرا، وقيل: خدعتك نفسك.

Abi Sa`eed related:
Rajab is one of the four forbidden months, [in which fighting is prohibited]. Its days are written on the Gates of the sixth heaven. When a man fasts one of its days and renews his fast with the fear and consciousness of Allah, Allah makes that gate to speak and makes that day to speak, saying, “O our Lord forgive him!” And if he does not complete or perfect his fast with fear of Allah, they do not ask forgiveness for him and it is said, “your own self has betrayed you!”[5]

Hadith 6

من صام أول يوم من رجب عدل ذلك بصيام سنة، ومن صام سبعة أيام أغلق عنه سبعة أبواب النار، ومن صام من رجب عشرة أيام نادى مناد من السماء أن سل تعطه. أبو نعيم وابن عساكر عن ابن عمر.

From Ibn `Umar that the Prophet said:
Whoever fasts the first day of Rajab it will be equivalent to the fast of one year; and whoever fasts seven days in it, the seven gates of Hell will be closed for him; and whoever fasts ten days from Rajab, a caller will call out from the sky, “Ask and you will be given!”[6]

Hadith 7

من صام يوماً من رجب عدل صيام شهر، ومن صام منه سبعة أيام غلقت عنه أبواب الجحيم السبعة، ومن صام منه ثمانية أيام فتحت له أبواب الجنة الثمانية، ومن صام منه عشرة أيام بدل الله تعالى سيئاته حسنات، ومن صام منه ثمانية عشر يوماً نادى مناد إن الله تعالى غفر لك ما مضى فاستأنف العمل. الخطيب عن أبي ذر.

Abu Dharr related that the Prophet said:
Whoever fasts the a day of Rajab it will be equivalent to the fast of one month; and whoever fasts seven days in it the seven gates of Hell will be closed for him; and whoever fasts ten days from it, Allah will change all of his evil deeds into good ones; and whoever fasts from it eighteen days a caller will call out: Allah the Exalted has forgiven you; therefore renew your good deeds. [7]

Hadith 8

وأخرج البيهقي عن أنس رضي الله عنه قال: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ صَامَ يَوْمًا مِنْ رَجَبٍ كَانَ كَصِيَامِ سَنَةٍ، وَمَنْ صَامَ سَبْعَةَ أَيَّامٍ غُلِّقَتْ عَنْهُ سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَمَنْ صَامَ ثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ فُتِحَتْ لَهُ ثَمَانِيَةُ أَبْوَابِ الْجَنَّةِ، وَمَنْ صَامَ عَشَرَةَ أَيَّامٍ لَمْ يَسْأَلِ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ شَيْئًا إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ، وَمَنْ صَامَ خَمْسَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا نَادَى مُنَادٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ قَدْ غُفِرَ لَكَ مَا سَلَفَ فَاسْتَأْنِفِ الْعَمَلَ قَدْ بُدِّلَتْ سَيِّئَاتُكَ حَسَنَاتٍ، وَمَنْ زَادَ زَادَهُ اللَّهُ» وَفِي رَجَبٍ حُمِلَ نُوحٌ فِي السَّفِينَةِ، فَصَامَ نُوحٌ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَأَمَرَ مَنْ مَعَهُ أَنْ يَصُومُوا وَجَرَتْ بِهِمُ السَّفِينَةُ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ إِلَى آخِرِ ذَلِكَ لِعَشْرٍ خَلَوْنَ مِنَ الْمُحَرَّمِأشهر إلى آخر ذلك لعشر خلون من المحرم

Anas related that the Prophet said:
Rajab is a tremendous month in which Allah multiplies the good deeds. So whoever fasts a day from Rajab it is as if he fasted a year; and whoever fasts seven days of it the seven gates of Hell are closed to him; and whoever fasts eight days from it the eight  gates of Paradise are opened to him; and whoever fasts ten days from it will not ask Allah something except that Allah will grant it. And whoever fasts from it fifteen days a caller will call out from heavens “Verily you have been forgiven whatever is past, so renew your good actions, for indeed your transgressions have been transformed into virtuous deeds.” And whoever does more, Allah gives to him even more. And in Rajab Allah carried Nuh in the ark and he fasted and ordered all those with him to do so. And the ark sailed with them for six months until the first ten days of Muharram.[8]

Hadith 9

وأخرج ابن عساكر عن خالد الزيات قال: بلغنا أن نوحا عليه السلام ركب السفينة أول يوم من رجب وقال لمن معه من الجن والإنس: صوموا هذا اليوم فإنه من صامه منكم بعدت عنه النار مسيرة سنة، ومن صام منكم سبعة أيام أغلقت له أبواب جهنم السبعة، ومن صام منكم ثمانية أيام فتحت له أبواب الجنة الثمانية، ومن صام منكم عشرة أيام قال الله له: سل تعطه، ومن صام منكم خمسة عشر يوما قال الله له: استأنف العمل قد غفرت لك ما مضى، ومن زاد زاده الله. فصام نوح عليه السلام في السفينة رجب، وشعبان، ورمضان، وشوالا، وذا القعدة، وذا الحجة، وعشرا من المحرم، فأرست السفينة يوم عاشوراء فقال نوح عليه السلام لمن معه من الجن
والإنس: صوموا هذا اليوم.

Khalid az-Zeeyaat said:
It has reached us that on the first of Rajab Allah Nuh set sail in the ark and he fasted and ordered all those with him from Jinn and mankind to do so saying: Fast this day for verily whoever among you fasts it, will be brought far from the Fire the distance of one year’s travel; and whoever fasts seven days of it the seven gates of Hell are closed to him; and whoever fasts eight days from it the eight  gates of Paradise are opened to him; and whoever fasts ten days from it will not ask Allah something except that Allah will grant it. And whoever fasts from it fifteen days a caller will call out from heavens “Verily you have been forgiven whatever is past, so renew your good actions, whatever is past is forgiven.” And whoever does more, Allah gives to him even more. Nuh fasted in the ark Rajab, Sha`ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul-Q`idah and Dhul-Hijjah and ten days of Muharram. Then the ark came to rest on `Āshūra and Nuh   said to all those who were with him from Jinn and humankind, “Fast this day.”[9]

Hadith 10

 رجب شهر عظيم يضاعف الله فيه الحسنات، فمن صام يوماً من رجب فكأنما صام سنة، ومن صام منه سبعة أيام غلقت عنه سبعة أبواب جهنم، ومن صام منه ثمانية أيام فتحت له ثمانية أبواب الجنة، ومن صام منه عشرة أيام لم يسأل الله شيئاً إلا أعطاه، ومن صام منه خمسة عشر يوماً نادى مناد من السماء قد غفر لك ما مضى فاستأنف العمل، ومن زاد زاده الله، وفي رجب حمل الله نوحاً في السفينة فصام رجب وأمر من معه أن يصوموا فجرت بهم السفينة ستة أشهر آخر ذلك يوم عاشوراء، أهبط على الجودي فصام نوح ومن معه والوحش شكراً لله عز وجل،….

عن سعيد بن أبي راشد

Sa`eed ibn Abi Rushd related that the Prophet said:
Rajab is a tremendous month in which Allah multiplies the good deeds. So whoever fasts a day from Rajab it is as if he fasted a year; and whoever fasts seven days of it the seven gates of Hell are closed to him; and whoever fasts eight  days from it the eight  gates of Paradise are opened to him; and whoever fasts ten days from it will not ask Allah except that Allah will grant it. And whoever fasts from it fifteen days a caller will call out from heavens ‘Verily you have been forgiven whatever you have done in the past, so renew your good actions.” And whoever does more, Allah gives to him even more. And in Rajab Allah carried Nūh in the ark for six months, the last of them being the day of `Āshūra, in which it landed on the mountain of Judee, and Nūh fasted along with all those with him as well as the animals, in thanks to Allah…[10]

Hadith 11

خمس ليال لا ترد فيهن الدعوة‏‏أول ليلة من رجب وليلة النصف من شعبان وليلة الجمعة وليلة الفطر‏ ‏وليلة النحر‏

Ibn `Abd al-Razzāq narrates that  Ibn `Umar said:
There are five nights in which invocation (du`a) is not rejected:  the first night of Rajab, the night of mid-Sha`ban, the night of Jum`a, and the night of [the `Eid of] Fitr and the night of [the `Eid of] Sacrifice.[11]

Hadith 12

 ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا ‏حِبَّانُ ‏قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا ‏ ‏عَبْدُ اللَّهِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏شُعْبَةَ ‏عَنْ ‏أَنَسِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ‏ ‏قَالَ سَمِعْتُ ‏ ‏عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ أَبِي الْمِنْهَالِ ‏يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ ‏أَبِيهِ ‏‏أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏أَمَرَهُمْ بِصِيَامِ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ الْبِيضِ قَالَ هِيَ صَوْمُ الشَّهْرِ

Muhammad ibn Hātim informed us that Hibbān said that we were informed by Abdallāh from Shu`bah from Anas ibn Sirreen who said, I heard `Abd al-Mālik ibn Abi al-Minhāl convey from his father that the Prophet ordered them to fast the three “white” days. He said, “It is [equivalent] to fasting the entire month.”[12]

Hadith 13

وأخرج ابن جرير عن قيس بن عباد – رضي الله عنه – قال: العاشر من رجب، هو يوم يمحو الله فيه ما يشاء.

Qays ibn `Abbaad said, “The tenth of Rajab is the day that Allah blots out or confirms what He pleases.” [a reference to Quran, 13:39][13]

Hadith 14

 وأخرج ابن المنذر وابن أبي حاتم والبيهقي في الشعب، عن قيس بن عباد – رضي الله عنه – قال: لله أمر في كل ليلة العاشر من أشهر الحرم، أما العشر من الأضحى، فيوم النحر. وأما العشر من المحرم، فيوم عاشوراء. وأما العشر من رجب، ففيه {يمحو الله ما يشاء ويثبت} قال: ونسيت ما قال في ذي القعدة.

Qays ibn `Abbaad said:
To Allah belongs the command on the tenth night of every sacred month. As for the tenth of the [month of] sacrifice, that is the Day of Sacrifice. As for the tenth of Muharram, that is the day of `Āshūra. As for the tenth of Rajab, in it [Allah revealed about it] “Allah doth blot out or confirm what He pleaseth.” [13:39] He said, “I forgot what he said regarding Dhul Qa`idah.”[the fourth sacred month][14]

Hadith 15

عَنْ مِخْنَفِ بْنِ سُلَيْمٍ رَضِيَ الله عَنْهُ قَالَ: كُنَّا وُقُوفًا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِعَرَفَاتٍ فَسَمِعْتُهُ يَقُولُ: “يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ عَلَى كُلِّ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ أُضْحِيَّةٌ وَعَتِيرَةٌ هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْعَتِيرَةُ، هِيَ الَّتِي تُسَمُّونَهَا الرَّجَبِيَّةَ”. أخرجه البيهقي  و  أحمد  وأبو داود  والترمذي والنسائي  وابن ماجه  وصححه الألباني

Mikhnaf ibn Sulaym  said we were standing with the Prophet on Arafat and we heard him say: O mankind! It is obligatory on every family in every year to sacrifice an `ateera. Do you know what the `ateera is? That is what you call the Rajabiyya, (sacrifice of Rajab).” [15]

Hadith 16

عن نبيشة بن عمرو الصحابي  أنهم قالوا : يا رسول الله إنا كنا نعتر فيه في الجاهلية ، يعني في رجب . قال  صلى الله عليه وسلم : اذبحوا لله في أي شهر كان وبروا الله وأطعموا. سنن أبي داود

The Companion Nabishah bin Amro  heard people ask the Prophet : “Oh Prophet of Allah, we used to perform special qurban in the month of Rajab in the Time of Ignorance.” The Prophet replied: “Sacrifice for the sake of Allah in any month you like, and do good deeds for Allah and feed the poor.”[16]

Hadith 17

أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” إِنَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ نَهْرًا يُقَالُ لَهُ: رَجَبٌ، أَشَدُّعن بَيَاضًا مِنَ اللَّبَنِ وَأَحْلَى مِنَ الْعَسَلِ، مَنْ صَامَ مِنْ رَجَبٍ يَوْمًا سَقَاهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ النَّهْرِ “

Sayyidina Anas bin Malik  relate that the Prophet said: “Verily there is a river in Paradise called “Rajab”, whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever fasted a day from Rajab, Allah will quench his thirst from that river.”[17]

Hadith 18

عَنْ سَلْمَانَ الْفَارِسِيِّ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ” فِي رَجَبٍ يَوْمٌ وَلَيْلَةٌ مَنْ صَامَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمَ ، وَقَامَ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ كَانَ كَمَنْ صَامَ مِنَ الدَّهْرِ مِائَةَ سَنَةٍ وَقَامَ مِائَةَ سَنَةٍ وَهُوَ لِثَلاثٍ بَقِينَ مِنْ رَجَبٍ ، وَفِيهِ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ مُحَمَّدًا صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ” . اسْمُ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَلٍّ ، مُخَضْرَمٌ .

From Salman al-Farsi  who said that the Prophet said: “In Rajab there is a day and a night such that whoever fasted that day and stood in prayer during its night is like one who fasted every single day for 100 years and stood every night in prayer for 100 years and that is the last three days of Rajab, in it Allah `azza wa jall dispatched Muhammad with the Message.”[18]

Discussion

Discussing some of these ahadith, Imam as-Suyuti, in his al-Hawi li’l-Fatawi says:

مسألة : في حديث أنس قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : ” إن في الجنة نهرا يقال له : رجب ، ماؤه أبيض من اللبن وأحلى من العسل ، من صام يوما من رجب سقاه الله من ذلك النهر ” . وحديث أنس قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : ” من صام من شهر حرام الخميس والجمعة والسبت ، كتب له عبادة سبعمائة سنة ” ، وحديث ابن عباس : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : ” من صام من رجب يوما كان كصيام شهر ، ومن صام منه سبعة أيام غلقت عنه أبواب الجحيم السبعة ، ومن صام منه ثمانية أيام فتحت له أبواب الجنة الثمانية ، ومن صام منه عشرة أيام بدلت سيئاته حسنات ” هل هذه الأحاديث موضوعة ؟ وما الفرق بين الضعيف والغريب .الجواب : ليست هذه الأحاديث بموضوعة ، بل هي من قسم الضعيف الذي تجوز روايته في الفضائل ، أما الحديث الأول فأخرجه أبو الشيخ ابن حيان في كتاب الصيام ، والأصبهاني وابن شاهين ، كلاهما في الترغيب ، والبيهقي وغيرهم ، قال الحافظ ابن حجر : وليس في إسناده من ينظر في حاله سوى منصور بن زائدة الأسدي ، وقد روى عنه جماعة لكن لم أر فيه تعديلا ، وقد ذكره الذهبي في الميزان وضعفه بهذا الحديث ، وأما [ ص: 420 ] الحديث الثاني فأخرجه   لطبراني وأبو نعيم وغيرهما من طرق بعضها بلفظ :
عبادة سنتين ، قال الحافظ ابن حجر : وهو أشبه ، ومخرجه أحسن ، وإسناد الحديث أمثل من الضعيف قريب من الحسن . وأما الحديث الثالث فأخرجه البيهقي في فضائل الأوقات وغيره ، وله طرق وشواهد ضعيفة لا تثبت ، إلا أنه يرتقي عن كونه موضوعا . وأما الفرق بين الضعيف والغريب فإن بينهما عموما وخصوصا من وجه ، فقد يكون الحديث ضعيفا غريبا معا ، وقد يكون غريبا لا ضعيفا ; لصحة سنده أو حسنه ، وقد يكون ضعيفا لا غريبا لتعدد إسناده وفقد شرط من شروط القبول ، كما هو مقرر في علم الحديث .

Question: in the hadith of Anas , the Prophet said: Verily there is in Paradise a river named “Rajab”, whose water is as white as milk and as sweet as honey. Whoever fasted one day from Rajab, Allah will quench his thirst from that river.” and the hadith of Anas who said that the Prophet Rajab al-Murajjab said, “Whoever fasted one day from the Sacred months its Thursday and its Friday and its Saturday, Allah will write for him the worship of 700 years.” and the hadith of ibn `Abbas who said that the Prophet  said, “Whoever fasts one day of Rajab it will be equivalent to the fast of one month, and whoever fasts seven days in it, the seven gates of Hell will be closed for him; and whoever fasts eight days in it, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him; and whoever fasts ten days from Rajab, his evil deeds will be changed into good ones.” Are these ahadith falsified ? And what is the difference between weak (da`eef) and singular (ghareeb)?

Answer: These ahadith are not falsified. Rather they are from the group of weak ahadith which may be used as narrations regarding the benefits of worship (ie. they are acceptable in promoting worship). As for the first hadith, Abu Shaykh ibn Hayyaan narrated it in the Book of Fasting, as did al-Asbahani and ibn Shaheen and both of them are among the (targheeb) promoting worship and in al-Bayhaqi and others. The Hafizh ibn Hajar said: there is nothing in its chain (isnad) who needs verification of his condition except Mansour in Zaa’ida al-Asadee. And many related from him but as for me I don’t see him as trustworthy (ta`deela). And al-Dhahabi mentioned it in his Mizan and said this hadith is weak. But as for [p. 420] the second hadith at-Tabarani has related it as did Abu Na`eem and other than them with some chains using the wording “…the worship of two years”. Ibn Hajar says (about it): It is similar and its transmission is better and its chain is similar to weak but closer to hasan (good). As for the third hadith it was transmitted by al-Bayhaqi in “The Virtues of Times” and other than him as well. And it has many weak chains and supporting ahadith which are not confirmed, except that it is raised up from being considered a falsification (mawd`oo).

As for the difference between the weak (da`eef) and the singular (ghareeb), there are commonalities between them and some specifics for each type. Certainly the weak hadith can be in the meaning of strange and certainly a hadith could be singular but not weak, due to the authenticity of its chain or at least it being good. And it could be weak but not singular due to the numerous chains but it is missing one of the rules for making it accepted as is often repeated in the Science of Hadith.

Related by ad-Daylami and others from Anas (marfu`an) and Abi Shaykh from Abu Hurayrah and Abu Sa`eed marfu`an) with the wording, “Verily the month of Ramadan is the month of my Nation.” However Ibn al-Jawzi in his Mawdu`at  (Forgeries) related it through many different ways, as did al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in Kitab tabayyin al-`ajab feemaa warada fee rajab.
