أخبرنا أبو القاسم الحسن بن محمد بن حبيب المفسر من أصل سماعه أخبرنا أبو عبدالله محمد بن عبدالله الصفار الأصبهاني قراءة عليه حدثنا أبو جعفر أحمد بن موسى الحمار الكوفي بالكوفة حدثنا زياد بن يزيد بن بادويه ثنا أبو بكر القصري حدثنا محمد بن نواس الكوفي حدثنا أبو بكر بن عياش عن أبي إسحاق عن البراء رضي الله عنه قال بينما عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه يخطب الناس على منبر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذ قال أيها الناس أفيكم سواد بن قارب؟ قال فلم يجبه أحد تلك السنة فلما كانت السنة المقبلة قال: أيها الناس أفيكم سواد بن قارب؟ قال: فقلت يا أمير المؤمنين وما سواد بن قارب؟ قال: فقال له عمر رضي الله عنه يا سواد حدثنا ببدء إسلامك كيف كان قال سواد فإني كنت نازلا بالهند وكان لي رئي من الجن قال فبينا أنا ذات ليلة نائم إذ جاءني في منامي ذلك قال قم فافهم واعقل إن كنت تعقل قد بعث رسول من لؤي بن غالب ثم أنشأ يقول: عجبت للجن وتحساسها وشدها العيس بأحلاسها تهوى إلى مكة تبغي الهدى ما خير الجن كأنحاسها فانهض إلى الصفوة من هاشم واسم بعينيك إلى رأسها قال ثم أنبهتي فأفزعني وقال يا سواد بن قارب إن الله عز وجل بعث نبيا فانهض إليه تهتد وترشد فلما كان من الليلة الثانية أتاني فأنبهني ثم أنشأ يقول: عجبت للجن وتطلابها وشدها العيس بأقتابها تهوي إلى يعني مكة تبغي الهدى ليس قداماها كأذنابها فانهض إلى الصفوة من هاشم واسم بعينيك إلى قابها فلما كان في الليلة الثالثة أتاني فأنبهني ثم قال: عجبت للجن وتخبارها وشدها العيس بأكوارها تهوي إلى مكة تبغي الهدى ليس ذوو الشر كأخيارها فانهض إلى الصفوة من هاشم ما مؤمنوا الجن ككفارها قال: فلما سمعته تكرر ليلة بعد ليلة وقع في قلبي حب الإسلام من أمر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ما شاء الله قال فانطلقت إلى رحلي فشددته على راحلتي فما حللت تسعة ولا عقدت أخرى حتى أتيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فإذا هو بالمدينة مكة والناس عليه كعرف الفرس فلما رآني النبي قال ” مرحبا بك يا سواد بن قارب قد علمنا ما جاء بك ” قال: قلت يا رسول الله قد قلت شعرا فاسمعه مني قال صلى الله عليه وسلم ” قل يا سواد ” فقلت: أتاني رئي بعد ليل وهجعة ولم يك فيما قد بلوت بكاذب ثلات ليال قوله كل ليلة أتاك رسول من لؤي بن غالب فشمرت عن ساقي الإزار ووسطت بي الدعلب الوجناء بين السباسب فاشهد أن الله لا رب غيره وأنك مأمون على كل غائب وأنك أدنى المرسلين وسيلة إلى الله يا ابن الأكرمين الأطايب فمرنا بما يأتيك يا خير مرسل وإن كان فيما جاء شيب الذوائب وكن لى شفيعا يوم لا ذو شفاعة سواك بمغن عن سواد بن قارب قال فضحك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم حتى بدت نواجذه وقال لي ” أفلجت يا سواد ” فقال له عمر رضي الله عنه هل يأتيك رئيك الآن؟ فقال ” منذ قرأت القرآن لم يأتني ونعم العوض كتاب الله عز وجل من الجن ” ثم أسنده البيهقي من وجهين آخرين ومما يدل على وفادتهم إليه صلى الله عليه وسلم بعدما هاجر إلى المدينة
In the report given by Imam Baihaqi in his Hadith collection that Sayyidina ‘Umar (r) was giving the Jumu`ah khutba on the minbar of the Prophet of Allah (s) when he said, “is Sawaad bin Qaarib present?” and no one answered him. The following year [at the same time of year] Sayyidina `Umar (r) was giving the khutba and asked “is Sawaad bin Qaarib present?” and a man said “what do you want of Sawad bin Qaarib?” Sayyidina ‘Umar (r) said, “tell the people of how your Islam began.” Hadrat Sawaad bin Qaarib stated: “In the period of ignorance or pre-Islamic period, I used to go to India, and I had friendship with a jinn who used to give me information about the future events which I used to tell the people. Many people had become my devotees and offered me the presents as information by him always proved true. One day, he came and awakened me when I was asleep and said: ‘Get up and be conscious. If you possess some sense, know that a Prophet has come from the descendants of Lu`ay bin Ghalib.’ Then, the jinn recited a few verses which meant:
“I was impresssed by the jinn and their quest,
How they saddled up their camels,
And swept towards Mecca, seeking guidance,
The truthful jinni is not as the untruthful one,
So travel to the cream of Banu Hashim,
Their fronts are not like their hindquarters.“
Sawaad bin Qaarib stated that: “after hearing these couplets, I remained restless throughout the night. The second night, also, that jinn came and awakened me and recited similar couplets to the first visit. The third night, also, this event took place. As the event happened for three nights continuously, the love of Islam settled in my heart and I reached Makkah for the Prophet (saw). As soon as the Prophet (saw) saw me, he said: ‘Welcome! O Sawaad bin Qaarib. I know what brings you here.’ I submitted: ‘O Apostle of Allah! I have composed some couplets praising you. Please, first listen to these couplets.’ Being permitted by the Prophet (saw) Sawaad recited his poem praising the Prophet (saw):
‘My confidant from the jinn to me following repose and sleep,
and he was not a liar in my experience.
Three nights he came to me and every night his words were:
‘A Messenger has come to you from Lu`ay bin Ghalib’
So I raised up the ends of my izar and hastened,
Riding a fast camel across the desert,
And I testify that there is no lord besides Allah,
and that you are entrusted with the Unseen,
and that you are the last of the Messengers whose intercession
may be sought with Allah, O son of nobles and virtuous men,
So command me with what come to you from you Lord’s revelation,
Even if there be white hairs in what you say,
And be an intercessor on the Day when none can interecede,
When naught (else) will benefit Sawaad ibn Qaarib.’
