Ibn Umar (ر) reported that the Prophet (ص) said: “Verily Allah boasts to the angels on the evening of Arafah about the People of Arafah. He says: ‘Look at My servants! They have come to Me, disheveled and covered in dust.'” (Ahmad)

In another hadith the Prophet’s wife Hafsah, (ر), said:

“Four things the Prophet of Allah (s) never neglected: Observing fast on the day of  Ashura, Arafat, three days every month, and offering Fajr sunnah prayers early in the morning.” (Ahmad and Nasa’i)

Fasting on this day is a forgiveness for two years: sins of the previous year and sins of the coming year and fasting the Day of Ashura is considered by Allah as forgiveness for the previous year. (Muslim)

There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. (Muslim)

Explanation

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya writes in Zad al-Ma`ad:

That in the Day of Arafah the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, descends for the People of the Standing (wuqoof), and then He boasts of them the angels, and He says, “What do these ones desire? I take you all as witnesses that I have forgiven them!” Due to His Descent [without “how”] towards them this becomes a time of acceptance of prayers in which no one asking goodness is refused and thus they come closer to Him by their dua to Allah and calling on Him in this hour. And Allah is closer to them in this time in two different aspects: the first is closeness of the confirmed acceptance of their prayers in this hour, and the second is His special closeness to the People of Arafat, and His boasting of them to the angels, and the hearts of the people of faith perceive these events, and through them increase faith upon their faith, and joy and happiness and rejoicing at the Bounty of their Lord upon them and His Generosity. And from these two aspects as well as others, when Jumuah takes places on the Day of Standing it has greater virtue than on other days.

As-Su`di in his Tafsir of the verse “And ten nights” (89:2)says:

These are the first ten days of Dhil-Hijjah and the Standing on Arafah, in which Allah forgives His servants a forgiveness which makes shaytan grieve. For on no other day does shaytan see itself more low and more defeated than on the Day of Arafah, from what he sees of the descent of the angels on Arafah and the Mercy of Allah towards His servants. And many of the special acts of Hajj and `Umrah fall under this as well, and these acts are exalted and confirmed, for Allah Himself has sworn an oath by them.

Allah swt says “and that they might recall the name of Allah on the days appointed …” (22:28)

And Ibn Abbas (ر) and Imam Shafi`i and the majority of scholars: this refers to the ten days.

Imam Nawawi writes in his book al-Adhkar:

Know that is commendable (mustahabb) to increase the remembrance of Allah in these ten days, over other days, and to increase even further in remembrance on the Day of Arafah over the rest of the ten days.

One of the Pious Predecessors said:

As for those for whom Hajj is not easy (and therefore not compulsory) and stay home then let them stand before Allah through His Rights that they know about, and whoever is unable to spend the night at Muzdalifa, then let them spend the night in raising up Allah’s Obedience, for He has come near, and whoever is unable to do a sacrifice at Mina, let him sacrifice his desires and he will have attained his desire, and whoever is unable to reach the Sacred House, due to his distance, let him intend the Lord of the House, for verily He is closer to him in dua then the jugular vein.
